About the Figural Reasoning section
Figural Reasoning is the section that makes POSS different from the line-worker batteries, and it is the one with the least free material anywhere. EEI's POSS brochure describes 20 questions in 10 minutes across three item types: picture series, picture comparison and picture progression.
There is no knowledge involved. A set of figures changes according to a rule, and you either continue the series, find the odd one out, or complete a progression. The rules are things like rotation, reflection, adding or removing an element, alternating shading, or a count that grows by a fixed step — often two of them at once.
Because there is nothing to revise, practice here is about building a search routine: check one property at a time rather than staring at the whole figure hoping the answer appears. Our items are generated with a stated rule behind every one, and each explanation names the rule so you learn the vocabulary of what to look for.
Tips from practice
- Check properties one at a time in a fixed order: rotation, then count, then shading, then position.
- Look at what stays the same as well as what changes; constants rule options out quickly.
- If two rules seem to be running at once, that is normal — find one, then look for the second among the remaining options.
- At roughly 30 seconds a question, commit to your best option and move on. EEI's brochures state nothing is deducted for a wrong answer.
Common questions
- Which battery has Figural Reasoning?
- EEI's brochures describe it in POSS, the battery for power plant operator roles. The CAST family and MASS do not include it, so it is only worth your time if you are applying for plant operations.
- Is it the same as an IQ test?
- It is the same broad family of abstract pattern items, but the section is described and timed in its own way, and how it is weighted is not public. We do not report an IQ or any comparison to one.
