What are the EEI tests?
The Edison Electric Institute runs an employment testing consortium for US electric utilities. Its batteries are the standard aptitude tests for craft, plant and technical hiring: if you are applying to an investor-owned utility for a line worker, plant operator or maintenance job, this is very likely what you will sit.
They are short, timed, multiple-choice sections taken at a test center or on site. The same Mechanical Concepts section — 44 questions in 20 minutes — appears in all four of the batteries we cover, so most of your practice counts whichever job you are going for.
Results are reported as an index, on a different scale for each battery, and the cutoff is set locally by the employer. Nobody publishes a pass mark, so we will never tell you what score you need — only how you are doing on our practice, and which section to work on next.

What are the EEI tests?
The Edison Electric Institute runs an employment testing consortium for US electric utilities, and its batteries are the aptitude tests most investor-owned utilities use for craft, plant and technical hiring. The four we cover are CAST and its revised version CAST-R (construction and skilled trades, including line workers), POSS (power plant operators) and MASS (plant maintenance trades).
Which test will I take?
Your employer decides, and the invitation letter usually says. As a rough guide: line worker, substation and meter service roles sit CAST or CAST-R; power plant operator roles sit POSS; plant mechanic, machinist, electrician, welder and pipe fitter roles sit MASS. Some utilities administer POSS and MASS together in one longer session.
What score do I need to pass?
Nobody publishes one. EEI's CAST brochure says cutoff scores can be tailored to local company employment needs, and no US utility publishes its number — a federal appeals court described the same arrangement for another EEI battery: EEI suggests cut scores, employers set their own. Any specific figure you see online is a guess, so we do not print one.
Is this the official test, or real test content?
No. Utility Tests is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to EEI or any utility. Every question, drawing, passage and statement here is original and was written from publicly published descriptions of the sections, so the look, timing and scoring will not be identical to a real test.
Can I use a calculator on the real test?
It depends on the employer. The only EEI statement permitting one covers Graphic Arithmetic in CAST-R. Several utilities tell candidates calculators are not allowed, and at least one says a basic calculator will be provided. Practice both ways and assume you will not have your own unless your invitation says otherwise.
What is the difference between Standard and Complete?
Standard ($29) unlocks unlimited practice and timed runs for the five CAST and CAST-R sections: Graphic Arithmetic, Mechanical Concepts, Reading for Comprehension, Mathematical Usage and the Work Preferences Inventory. Does it work on a phone?
Yes, every section works on phones and tablets. The real test is taken on a computer or on paper at a test center, so a desktop or laptop gives the most realistic practice — particularly for Graphic Arithmetic, where you need to see a whole drawing at once.
