About the Reading for Comprehension section

Every battery we cover includes a reading section, and it is worth more attention than most candidates give it. EEI's CAST and CAST-R brochures describe 32 questions on four passages in 30 minutes; the POSS and MASS brochures describe 36 questions on five passages in the same half hour.

The passages are not literature. They read like a switching procedure, a lockout rule, an equipment manual or a safety bulletin, and the questions test whether you took the right meaning out of them. That is exactly what the job asks: crews and operators work from written procedures where a word like "shall" or "unless" changes what you are allowed to do.

Our passages are original, written on utility, plant and general workplace topics. Every question comes with an explanation that points at the sentence the answer rests on and says why each tempting option goes beyond the text.

Tips from practice

Skim the questions before reading the passage so you know what you are looking for.
Answer from the passage, not from your own experience on the tools. Plausible is not the same as supported.
Watch absolutes — always, never, only, all. They are usually how a wrong option overreaches.
Budget your time per passage and stick to it; falling behind on passage two costs you passage five.
