Mathematical Usage: Short Form and Long Form

EEI's Mathematical Usage test comes in a short form of 18 questions in 7 minutes and a long form of 46 in 17. What is in each and how to build the speed.

Mathematical Usage is EEI's speed math test, and it exists in two documented versions. The short form is 18 questions in 7 minutes — about 23 seconds each — built on basic mathematical formulas, and it appears in CAST, MASS and the short-form POSS battery. The long form is 46 questions in 17 minutes, roughly 22 seconds each, split into formula conversion problems, algebra problems and word problems, and it appears in the long-form POSS battery. SO/PD II uses a third variant, 16 questions in 17 minutes, which is far more generous.

The CAST-R battery removes Mathematical Usage entirely and puts the Work Preferences Inventory in its place, so whether you face this section at all depends on which version of the trades battery your employer uses.

The short and long forms run at almost exactly the same pace, so the difference between them is stamina and breadth rather than speed: the long form sustains it for 17 minutes and adds algebra and word problems to the formula work. The SO/PD II version runs nearly three times slower per question, which suggests harder items rather than an easier test.

What is on it

EEI describes the short form as basic mathematical formulas, and the long form as solving and manipulating mathematical relationships across three parts. In practice that means:

  • Unit conversion — length, area, volume, weight and time, including the ones people fumble under pressure such as feet to yards or square feet to square yards.
  • Formula application — substituting values into a stated relationship and evaluating it. Ohm's law, power, area, volume and rate relationships are natural territory for a utility test.
  • Formula rearrangement — the long form's conversion problems: given a relationship, solve for a different variable.
  • Percentages, ratios and proportions — increases, decreases, parts of a whole, scaling one quantity against another.
  • Word problems — a short scenario you must turn into arithmetic, on the long form only.

Getting to 23 seconds

Nothing here is difficult in isolation. The entire difficulty is that you have twenty-three seconds, and twenty-three seconds is not enough to work out how to do the question and then do it. The method has to be automatic already.

That points to a specific kind of practice: short, frequent, timed. Seven minutes is small enough to fit into a lunch break, and one 7-minute set a day for two weeks will move you further than one long session a week. Alongside timed sets, three things are worth memorizing outright, because looking them up is what costs the seconds:

  1. Conversion factors within the customary system and to metric — 12, 3, 5,280, 43,560, 7.48 and so on. If you hesitate over how many feet are in a mile, that is a hesitation you can eliminate permanently in an afternoon.
  2. Fraction-to-decimal equivalents for eighths and sixteenths, which appear constantly in trade measurements.
  3. Percentage shortcuts: ten percent then adjust, halving and doubling, and five percent as half of ten.

One more habit: work in the units the question uses rather than converting everything to a preferred system first. Converting is a step, and a step you do not need costs you a question.

Strategy on the day

Because the clock is the constraint, the order you answer in matters more than on any other section. Go through once, taking everything you can do immediately and leaving anything that needs setting up. Then come back. Candidates who work strictly in order routinely leave answerable questions unmarked at the end because they spent ninety seconds on question six.

And since EEI's brochures state there is no penalty for guessing or wrong answers, the last fifteen seconds should be spent filling in every blank. A blank is a guaranteed zero; a guess is not.

Calculators

Assume you will not have one. Across the EEI brochures that employers publish for these batteries there is exactly one calculator statement, and it is not about Mathematical Usage: it permits a calculator on CAST-R's Graphic Arithmetic. The CAST, POSS, MASS, TECH and SO/PD II brochures say nothing either way, so the decision falls to the employer, and some ban electronic devices from the testing area entirely. Frequently asked questions

Which form will I get?

It follows the battery. CAST and MASS use the 18-question short form; the POSS battery exists in a short-form and a long-form version, and your employer's choice decides which you sit. CAST-R has no Mathematical Usage test at all.

Is there algebra on it?

On the long form, yes — EEI names algebra problems as one of its three parts, along with formula conversion and word problems. The short form is described as basic mathematical formulas.

How do I get faster?

Timed sets, daily, at the real length. Speed on this section comes from eliminating decisions rather than from computing faster, so memorizing conversion factors and fraction equivalents pays more than drilling arithmetic.

Should I guess if I run out of time?

Yes. EEI's brochures state there is no penalty for guessing or wrong answers, so mark every remaining item before the clock stops.
